Cable is expensive, and it seems the cost of cable is only increasing. Therefore, people are choosing to cut the cord completely and switch to streaming services. The best part about this? that is required to stream shows and movies to your television is an internet connection and a subscription to a streaming service.

There are a variety of streaming services to choose from, but these three main streaming services seem to always be competing for business: Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. How do you know which service is right for you? Below, let's look at some of the pros and cons of each streaming service.

●        Netflix

The most basic plan for Netflix begins at just $8.99 per month. To add additional devices, a subscription increases to $12.99 per month, or $15.99 per month for the premium plan. Netflix offers several network shows and movies, all of which are available to download for viewing offline.

Another added benefit of Netflix is they have several original series and movies that are exclusive to Netflix subscribers. Further, Netflix offers closed captioning for all English programming. However, one of the biggest downsides of Netflix is that subscribers will have to wait about a year to view any currently airing television shows, if Netflix chooses to pick up the rights to certain shows.

●        Hulu

One of the biggest benefits of Hulu is that subscribers can choose the plan, and subsequent cost, based on how many commercials they are willing to tolerate. The lowest price starts at $7.99 a month with limited commercials, or $11.99 a month with no commercials. Additionally, subscribers have the benefit of adding Showtime to their plan for an extra $8.99 per month.

Hulu is great to watch current television shows that air on regular network television. Often, these shows are available the day they air or the day after. They also have older seasons of popular television shows available.

The biggest drawback to Hulu is that compared to other streaming services, they have the most limited show selection. Plus, Hulu is not available for streaming outside of the United States.

●        Amazon Prime

Undoubtedly, the biggest benefit of Amazon Prime is that streaming services are free with a Prime membership. For people who do not subscribe to Prime, Amazon offers its streaming service for $8.99 per month.

Amazon boasts a very large catalog of available television shows and movies. Many of these are available to download to view offline. Its movies are also fully integrated with the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to allow viewers to quickly view a list of actors and actresses, biographies, and movie descriptions.

However, one of the biggest downfalls of Amazon streaming service is that sometimes it can be difficult to determine what is included with the subscription and what is an additional cost. Also, streaming services outside of the United States are limited.
